This blog will show images from my summer trip to India. I stayed two months there, first going to shoot images of Widows in Vrindavan .widowsofvrindavan.blogspot.com/. Then I headed toward Rajasthan, a place I already visited twice before.

During the summer months Jaisalmer can be really very, very hot. During the hot hours between 12 and 3 PM you can see people lying down in cool places. Here at one door the of the fort in Jaisalmer.

A room with a view. New Delhi
Life going on in Paharganj, near the New Delhi train station, shot from inside a restaurant. Even though the area has a bad reputation, i kind of like the atmosphere there. Unlike other cities where tourists places have lost their soul ( Kho Sand road in Bangkok for instance), here the area is still a living places for Indian families.

In the Shekawati region of Rajasthan you find plenty of old painted Havelis. Too bad that most of them are nowadays inhabited.
This Haveli is the property of people from Mumbay and the woman at the window is the caretaker of the Goenka Double Haveli in Mandawa, a quiet place.

Prayer. Mathura. Uttar Pradesh
Praying inside the temple alongside the sacred Yamuna River in Mathura.
Mathura is reputed to be the birthplace of Krishna, Krishnajanmabhoomi. The Keshav Dev temple was built in ancient times on the site of Krishna's supposed birthplace (an underground prison). As per epic Mahabharata, Mathura was the capital of the Surasena Kingdom, ruled by Kansa the maternal uncle of Krishna.

Opium Ceremonial. near Jodhpur. Rajasthan
In village near jodhpur, Enchie and her husband during the one the opium ceremony- a ritual by which guests are traditionally welcomed. Opium is distiilled in a small toolr seen on the bottom left, then the liquid is given into your hands to drink.. I tried, but it doesn't taste of anything..
Although now illegal in India, and forbidden by the 24th tenets of the Bishnoi, the sect still uses it and have been given special consent from the Indian government to use opium for ‘religious’ purposes. Legally , they are only allowed to use empty poppy pods, after the opium has been extracted for medical manufacture. The pods are then ground, mixed with a sugar solution, then diluted further with water for the ceremony.
I must say that nowadays it's mostly a touristic attraction.

City Palace. Jaipur. Rajasthan
At the entrance of the City Palace in Jaipur, one of the most famous tourist attractions and a major landmark in Jaipur. The beautiful palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh during his reign. Among the various forts and palaces of Jaipur, City Palace stands apart, with its outstanding art and architecture. City Palace complex covers a huge area, which is divided into a series of gardens, courtyards and buildings. Initially, Raja Jai Singh built the outer wall occupying a huge area. The additional grand buildings were constructed later by the succeeding rulers.
